Access information

We aim to provide a friendly, accessible environment for all our visitors and the widest possible access to our building, exhibitions and collections.

What3Words

What3Words is a location app which provides exact location points based on 3 metre squares. Every 3 metre square of the world has been given a unique combination of three words which can be shared with friends and family, emergency services and more to pinpoint locations easily.

We have provided What3Words locations for key areas of our attractions to help you navigate your visit.

Accessible parking

The nearest accessible on-street parking bays are located on Cookridge Street and Alexander Street which run alongside and behind the gallery. Victoria Gardens is pedestrianised.

Further accessible parking bays are available on Rossington Street and Vernon Street, and at the following car parks which are a 5-10 minute walk from the gallery:

  • Merrion Centre
  • Woodhouse Lane
  • The Light
  • The Rose Bowl

Accessible toilets

An accessible toilet is available in Artspace on the main gallery floor and in the Library on the upper floor, located through the Tiled Hall Café. Toilets are signposted and marked on the gallery plan leaflet that is available from the reception desk in the entrance hall. Facilities in the accessible toilets include emergency alarms and fire alarms with flashing lights.

Please note that the accessible toilets in Artspace and the library are RADAR key operated.

The nearest Changing Place toilet is located at nearby Leeds City Museum, approximately a five minute walk away from the gallery.

Baby change

Baby change facilities are available in the accessible toilets in Artspace on the main gallery floor.

Audio description and large print resources

We can offer a talk/audio description of artworks on display on request.
Please contact us to book before your visit.

Large print exhibition labels are available for temporary exhibitions, near the start of each gallery.

Please note: light levels are low in certain galleries. This is to protect and conserve the artworks in those areas.

Wheelchair access

There are two entrances to Leeds Art Gallery. The main entrance to the gallery is at the front of the building and is accessible via hand railed steps and a long and gradual ramp. The main entrance has two double automatic doors which open inwards. An information desk is available through the lobby in a large, open central hall.

There is an alternative entrance at a lower level ramped down to the left of the main gallery steps which is marked as wheelchair access for the library. Access to the gallery from this entrance is via the lift and then through the Tiled Hall Café. This entrance is also automatic.

A large proportion of the gallery is wheelchair accessible. Some things to note are:

  • wheelchair access to the upper floor display areas of the gallery is via the lift in the library. This lift has an audible announcer and has capacity for one wheelchair on any journey.
  • the education studio used by pre-booked groups is inaccessible to wheelchair users but equal alternatives are offered. Please discuss any access needs with the Learning and Access Officer when booking your visit.
  • the mezzanine level, which gives access to the Henry Moore Institute, is accessible via stairs only. As such, no work is displayed there. However there is a timeline of Leeds Art Gallery and Henry Moore Institute’s history, which is accessible online. Discover the Leeds Art Gallery and Henry Moore Institute’s timeline.

Seating is available around the gallery and in the Tiled Hall Café. There are permanent seats and small, fold-up stools for use around the gallery. Please note that seating throughout the gallery has temporarily been removed. A limited number of seats are available upon request. Please see a member of staff who will be happy to assist you.

The gallery has one wheelchair available for visitors to borrow. Please contact us in advance of your visit to ensure a chair is available, or ask a member of the team during your visit.

There are a number of tactile, audio, visual and interactive exhibits and spaces throughout the galleries.
