Bryan Jon Boykin, formerly of Batesville, died in an automobile accident on Sunday afternoon, October 10, 2010 at the age of 33.
Bryan spent the first five years of his life in Batesville, Arkansas. His parents, Bo and Margaret Boykin, then moved the family to Colorado. Bryan will always be remembered for his good heart, quick smile, engaging personality and passionate caring of others. He was a good athlete and played nose tackle for the 1994 State High School 5A Football Championship team at Cherry Creek High School in Greenwood Village, Colorado. His athletic abilities continued in college where he played guard for the Glendale Community College in 1995 and 1996. Bryan concluded his football career in 1997-1998 by playing center for the University of Central Arkansas Bears.
Bryan's true legacy, however, will be that of a Marine. Bryan proudly served in the Corps from 2005 to present and volunteered for duty in Iraq. While serving in the campaign he received three significant commendations, the NAVY AND MARINE CORPS COMMENDATION MEDAL for meritorious service, the NAVY AND MARINE CORPS ACHIEVEMENT MEDAL for professional achievement and a CERTIFICATE OF COMMENDATION FROM THE MARINE CORPS for exceptional performance .
That passion for duty to his country carried forward after his Marine Corps service ended by working for the Veterans Administration in Little Rock as an Administrative Support for the Suicide Prevention Program.
Bryan was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Bryan Boykin, and his grandparents, Mrs. Agnes Bryan, Jeslie Frederickson and Bubba Boykin. He is survived by his daughter, Hannah Bry Ann Bode, his sister, Heather Bartos and brother-in-law Matthew Bartos of Mansfield, Texas, his step-brother, Bobby Hughes of Batesville, Arkansas, and his step-mother, Marilyn Boykin and father Bo Boykin of Colorado, his grandfather Dr. J. M. Bryan formerly of Batesville, three nieces and one nephew, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins and his faithful dog Bubba.
Pallbearers are Matthew Bartos, Bobby Hughes, Jim Cargill, Richard Painter, Chad Reynolds, Jeffrey Scarbrough. Honorary pallbearers are Rocky Willmuth, Cpt. Fran Boyer, Lowell Hare, Steve Bryan, and Arch Jones.
Funeral services, with full Marine Corps honors, will be Thursday, October 14th at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Rev. John Drymon presiding. Burial will be at Oaklawn Cemetery in the Boykin Family plot where Bryan will rest at last with his mother, Margaret. Arrangements are by Roller-Crouch Funeral Home of Batesville.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Colorado at the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Centennial, Colorado.

I did not know Bryan, but as a commendated member of our wonderful United States Marine Corps, I had to say a profound thank you from the bottom of my heart for your service to us and your country, The United States of America, while fighting on foreign soil for our freedom and democracy.

Bryan truely was a great guy. I met him a few years ago through volunteer work with Kaleidoscope Kids. Although I never knew him extremely well, I always looked forward to seeing his warm smile at group and camp. He had a positive, uplifting attitude and had a way of commanding attention when he walked in a room. Bryan was a funny guy that kept people lauging. Though he left before his time, I know he is in a better place with his Father in Heaven.

I am so very sorry to hear of this terrible tragedy. I got to know Bryan through his work with the suicide prevention team. We recently held a POW recognition ceremony at Ft Roots,North Little Rock. Bryan was so very helpful with this ceremony. He prepared the program brochure, and took on the task of seating everyone. I was so appreciative of his assistance with this. I remember the first time we meet on the football field at UCA. We were good friends and teammates. I remember when he wanted to leave and was homesick but I had a one to one talk with him. We are heartbroken to hear of Bryan's passing. He was a dear family friend and a true gentle giant. We have so many good memories of Bryan growing up. One of our best memories was going to Sea World just before he deployed to Iraq. My two boys looked up to Bryan as a real hero. In times like these, it is hard to understand that God must have a greater plan for us.

Bryan, when we first met you told me you were in search of your roots...it seems a little unfair that in your journey to find them you found your wings as well. Bryan Boykin was one of the finest young men I ever met. My husband served with him in the United States Marine Corps in Okinawa, Japan and he became a member of my family. I loved him so much I gave him the honorary title of "John Wayne", the only other person I ever called that, besides my dad. He was so wonderful, I wanted him for a son in law...Bryan Boykin I love you...only the good are taken from us far too soon. My heart is broken. I cannot imagine the pain your family must be in.
